A recent highlight at Rutland Water was the Youth Day organised by Rutland Water Fly Fishers.

It saw 70 youngsters take to the water, supported by more than 45 volunteers, many of whom were RWFF members.

The youngsters caught 34 fish between them. Chris Evans of RWFF said: “It was a great introduction to fly fishing and we hope these young anglers are hooked for life.

“A big thank you to all the volunteers who took time to help. Thanks also to Anglian Water for their support and to the Fly Dressers Guild for providing some world class fly tying tuition on the day.”

The best fish of the week fell to Lincolnshire angler Ian Whiteside who netted a superb conditioned 6lb 3oz rainbow that took him down to the backing on his reel! This was a personal best from Rutland for Ian.

The high temperatures impacted on the number of anglers this week but those who made the effort were rewarded with excellent sport.

Of the few anglers who ventured down the Arms, season ticket holder Peter De Kremer managed six fish all on dries including two browns, one estimated over 5lb.

l Empingham’s Graham Hayward won week 11 of the Tuesday Night Boat League after taking eight fish for 17lb 2oz in less than three hours.

Richard Cooper was second with six fish for 14lb 14½oz and Chris Evans was third with eight fish for 14lb 8¾oz.

Cooper took the best fish – a rainbow of 3lb 13½oz.

After week 11, with four more weeks to go, Cooper has increased his lead to 64 points. Mick Bennett is on 54 points with Graham Hayward on 45 points. Keith Jones is in fourth place with 41 points.

The best rainbow so far was 6lb 3oz taken by Ian Whiteside of Lincoln, and the best brown was 3lb 3oz taken by Colan Bartrum of Edith Weston.

l The best boat areas were the main basin, bottom of the South Arm. The best bank areas were Sykes Lane, Ernie’s Point and Stockie Bay.

The best methods were, from the bank, floating lines with nymphs and dries, plus floating fry, and from the boats, the same but including various sinking lines with lures, nymphs, and lure combinations.

l The mid-week boat winner was John Gudson of Shropshire.
