Oakham and Uppingham Town win in the Rutland League
There were no doubts at the end of the day at who the winner was in Oakham’s Rutland League Division Two match with S & L Corby on Sunday as the Rutland side claimed a comprehensive nine wicket victory.
After winning the toss Corby opened the batting in less than glorious fashion thanks to the sharp bowling of the home side’s Rory Brown who took the first three wickets of the match for just two runs. It was a devastating blow which the visitors never really got over.
Top scorer for the visitors was Shaun Elliot with just 23 before he was caught and bowled by Simon Foulds for the first of his 2-18.
Harvey Stafford got in on the act with three straight wickets as the Corby side closed on 86 all out in the 29th over. Nick Davies also took a wicket for Oakham (1-24).
Just three men got to play a part in Oakham’s rapid reply as they made 92-1 midway through the 13th over.
Opener Matt Edge was ever present but only made 15 runs not out.
His fellow opener Will Stuart-Jones made 13 before getting bowled by Jack Thurman but that brought in Cameron Flowers and he was in no mode to wait around, striking a quick 60 to bring the game to a close.
l Uppingham Town marched pass Eaton Socon with a five wicket victory in the Rutland League Division One on Sunday.
Eaton were put in to bat by Town skipper Jamie Dumford. Each of their line up made a contribution with Mickey Hay starting with a patient 54 runs from 88 balls.
He eventually played a shot into the hands of Max Collins from the bowling of Don Burchart (2-38) who was one of the five Uppingham bowlers to take a wicket.
Ben Collins finished with 3-38, Alex Ashwin 2-29, Scott Green 2-30 and James Keywood took just 1-29 at the hosts finished on 164 all out in the 44th over.
Dumford opened the reply with a useful 22 runs before a shot was held by Mickey Hay.
Martin Bennett, fresh from making a big zero the day before, hit a nice 55 before he was stumped by Matt Taylor from the bowling or Chris Budd, who caused Uppingham a few problems, taking 3-36 for the best figures of the nine Eaton Socon bowlers used.
Budd accounted for Don Butchart (12) and Max Collins (14), and before that Tom Banks had claimed the wicket of Sam Hodson for 8. All three men were out to catches.
However Keywood (17 not ) and Harry Burchart (18 not out) took Uppingham to the required 165-5 in the 37th over.
Uppingham remain clear leaders in Division One ahead of Nassington who were not in action on Sunday. Oakham are sixth in Division Two.
