Oakham hang on to earn a losing draw at Sileby
Oakham heroically hung on to earn seven points and a losing draw away at Sileby Town 2nds in the Leicestershire League Division Two on Saturday.
Oakham won the toss and chose to take the ball but after taking opener Robert Moore’s wicket for a duck they struggled to make any headway. Moore was caught by Calvin Flowers off the bowling of Charlie Baker having faced just three balls.
But his opening partner Chris Bulmer ran up 43 runs before getting stumped and number three Brady Glennon top scored with a patient 82 runs, built on strong running between the wickets before he tried for one extra run too many and was run out.
There were no other big scores from the Sileby batsman but a 40 from Jack Ford and 34 from Micky Ruddle helped take the hosts to 251-7 at the close of their innings
It was not a great day for the bowling stats, Jamie Oakley took 2-55 and Calvin Flowers 1-54, Baker 1-33 and Rory Brown 1-51 took the other wickets. Tellingly none of the Oakham bowlers recorded a maiden during the innings.
After tea Cameron Flowers started the run chase with intent, he hit 44 runs, with 40 of his total coming from ten boundaries.
But at the other end of the attack Oakham were struggling, Chris Larsen went for four and Bhavin Shukla (14),Calvin Flowers (14) and Will Bell (0) quickly followed without significantly adding to the team’s total. In the end the Oakham batsmen settled themselves to frustrate the hosts who were chasing victory. Richard Martin (22) and Charlie Barker (28) took the score on before both losing their wicket however the visitors held on to finish on 165-9 and earn seven points which could prove valuable at the end of the season.
It was better news for Oakham’s 2nd team on Saturday who beat Leicester Caribbean 2nds by two wickets in Division Six East.
Again Oakham won the toss and again they chose to field however this time with better result. Caribbean’s openers put up some fight but once they fell Oakham took their final wicket in the 44th over, all out for 172. Top bowler on the day was Joe Stafford with 3-12 in just 3.4 overs. Ashish Patal took 2-37 and Graeme North took 2-34, bowling 12 and 11 overs respectively.
The result of some excellent bowling was it left Oakham with a manageable target. Neil Southern (25) and Will Stuart-Jones (24) got the home-side off to a good start, which was fortunate because Andrew Counsell (7) and North (4) were unable to add much to the total. But 65 not out from Shyman Lakhani got Oakham over the line, reaching 176-8 in the 42 over for a 25 point victory.
