Hard work on the training ground paid off for Oakham United on Saturday as they defeated pre-season title favourites Moulton Harrox in a Peterborough League Premier Division clash at Lands' End Meadow.

The Rutland side produced a rousing comeback as they had been trailing by two goals before halving the deficit on the stroke of half-time and then scoring three times without reply after the break.

It was the clinical performance that manager Seb Hayes had been looking for as his side have found goals hard to come by this season.

He said: "Moulton were the better side in the first half, but we stayed with them for long periods. They then allowed us to get back into the game and we scored just before half-time.

"I made a couple of changes at half-time to our shape and in the second half we were the better side. We were very clinical in front of goal.

"We have been working for weeks on our finishing and forward play in training and everything came to fruition on Saturday."

Moulton had started brightly and they took the lead when the lively Dec Earth cut inside and rifled home a superb finish into the top corner of the Oakham net.

Earth continued to cause plenty of problems for the home side and from another dangerous raid on the Oakham goal he saw his effort saved by Jamie Stephens with Alfie Woodward converting the rebound to double Harrox's lead.

Moulton continued to look the more threatening of the two teams but just before half-time Oakham got back into the contest as another training ground move paid dividends.

Phil Andre swung in a cross to the back post where Kieran Pledger's run was rewarded as he fired home a sweetly-struck volley into the corner of the Moulton net.

Oakham introduced Cameron Brookes at the interval as they switched to a more attacking formation.

And his arrival helped change the game as he got Oakham back on level terms when he pounced onto a headed clearance from Moulton goalkeeper Brendan Taylor which he returned with interest with a well-placed finish into the Harrox net.

Oakham were now buoyant and sealed their fourth win of the season with a double from top scorer Michael Nelson.

Nelson scored from the penalty spot following a hand-ball and also converted from a setpiece to seal a memorable win for boss Hayes.

It was the first time he had ever beaten Moulton as a manager in a match that pitted him against his former assistant boss Tim Cole who worked alongside Hayes at Holbeach United.

Hayes added: "We were deserved winners. The second half was a role reversal of the first and it was really good to get a result.

"I was over the moon with it. It did mean so much and it was one of the best results of my managerial career.

"It's among the top 15 games that I've ever won as a manager, but it was hard because one of my best mates was in the other dug-out and we have gone through a lot together.

"It was an important win for us but I didn't want to go overboard with the celebrations because I didn't feel it was right."

Hayes is now hoping his side can follow up their fine win when they make the short trip to face Wittering Premiair this weekend.

He continued: "We've now got to back it up and do it again. We haven't gone unbeaten for more than two games so far this season and I want to be a side who can go three, four or five games unbeaten.

"I would love that to happen and the squad we've now got is capable of doing that.

"We needed to get a result like Saturday because we have played well against all of the top sides.

"No-one has blown us away but what we haven't done is get a result so to beat Moulton is just what we needed. We need to prove that it wasn't a fluke though.

"We're not going to take anything for granted this weekend, but I'm really hoping we can turn up and replicate the performance because, if we do, then Wittering are in for a hard game. If we don't then they will come away with the three points."

Oakham have strengthened their playing ranks by signing three players from United Counties League side Blackstones.

Jacob Joyce made his United debut on Saturday with Andy Buckle and Alex McNally also joining with the trio having already played in the Peterborough League for Eye United this season.
