Oundle School progress to NatWest Cup semi-finals
Oundle School surged into the semi-finals of the prestigious Under 18 NatWest Cup with a 21-12 beating of Lymm High School on Thursday.
The win, achieved in front of hundreds of spectators in Oundle, means Oundle will play Bromsgrove at the Allianz Park - the home of top club side Saracens - on March 7 for a place in the final.
Oundle dominated the first half against Lymm with Toby Warner’s try adding to two penalties from Angus McRae for an 11-0 lead.
Tom Curry’s try enabled Oundle to stretch their lead further, but two tries and one conversion from the visitors made it 18-12 and led to a nervy finish. Fortunately McRae landed another penalty five minutes from to complete the scoring.
Oundle head of rugby John Olver said: “We played as well as we could have done in the first half, but massive credit to Lymm as they played with real character in the second half.
“The whole match and the atmosphere that the supporters created was a great advert for schools rugby. We don’t teach the boys anything we didn’t learn in our playing days, it’s all about looking after the ball and giving them a good outing up front!”
Headmaster of Oundle, Charles Bush, added, “This was a really spirited performance by a talented team who played as a very strong unit and managed to stifle the talented Lymm backs from getting too much of the ball. It was as good a performance as you are ever likely to see from an Oundle 1st XV side – all heart, passion and notable success.”
