Stamford Lions Veterans are celebrating after completing a memorable league and cup double.

After last week’s cup final victory over Oakham, the Lions completed a 100 per cent Peterborough Veterans League Division Three season with a 2-1 victory over Glinton & Northborough thanks to a brace of goals from top scorer James Huet.

Player-manager James Sheehan was delighted at doing the double after the club’s perseverance with the side paid off.

He said: “I am really pleased to have done the double this season.

“Eighteen months ago the club held a meeting regarding the veterans side and we almost folded it as we were struggling to field a team. We persevered though and the turn-around has been great.

“We have won every league game this season and have had some excellent performances.

“I’m really pleased for all the lads, especially those that have been with us now for the last three seasons.”

Huet’s double was the strikers 20th goal of the season in just nine games.

Lions Veterans had started their league campaign with a 1-0 win away at Cottesmore thanks to a Phil Bartlett goal.

It was a result that was to prove crucial as Cottesmore went unbeaten for the rest of the season.

Sheehan continued: “We dug deep that game. Goalkeeper John Feetham made two or three class saves which helped earn us that vital win.

“It was the springboard for us to go on and put a run of victories together.”
