PETANQUE: Open day at Bourne club

Bourne Abbots Petanque Club welcomed guests to try the sociable yet competitive French boule game at their open day on Saturday.

Despite the slightly chilly weather, a few people turned up and enjoyed learning how to point, shoot and get close to the cochonnet.

After a couple of games and tuition, five people expressed their interest in joining the club and are looking forward to improve on their newly acquired skills.

Petanque has become a very popular sport with many clubs being affiliated to the English Petanque Association, and competitions run in spring and summer for those who want to take the sport on a more serious level.

Petanque is a relatively cheap sport as most clubs will lend the equipment for you to play.

An annual membership at Bourne Abbots costs only £20 per adult and just £5 for under-18s. Even people who are not at all sporty can soon become skilled players.

Anybody interested in having a go can contact the club by email at bournepetanque@hotmail.co.uk or just turn up at their meeting time – 2pm Wednesdays and Sundays at Abbey Lawn, Abbey Road, Bourne.
