Rare Rothery header gives Oakham United victory
Another goal from midfielder Adam Rothery - this time a rare header - saw Oakham United beat Potton United 1-0 in the UCL Division One on Saturday.
The defeat all but ended Potton’s promotion hopes and goes to show that had some narrow results gone their way Oakham could be happily mixing it with the sides at the top of league.
In fact the scoreline flattered the visitors to Sterling Meadows as the Tractor Boys hit the post and the crossbar during the 90 minutes.
In the end it took Rothery’s effort in the 76th minute to seal the Rutland side’s revenge for their October reverse at the Hutchinson Hollow.
It was a quiet first half with saw both defences generally on top, with Richard Nelsom dominating proceedings for the hosts.
Oakham striker Ben Easson had the first real effort of the match and it was an audacious one, trying to chip Potton goalkeeper Craig Lewis from all of 45 yards with a dipping volley which just went over the cross bar.
It was action man Nelson who had the first effort on target, forcing a save out of Craig from a Stu Lambie free kick.
Potton were struggling to find the target and the best they had to show for their efforts were a pair of misses at the break.
Goalkeeper has been an area of concern for Oakham this season as first choice stopped Simon Dalton has been struggling with injury all season. Last week it was confirmed Dalton is out for the rest of the season as he has been told to stop battling through the pain by the doctors and rest a broken bone in his foot.
John Feetham filled in between the sticks on Saturday and was called into action early after the break to deny Darrel Wisby.
Despite Potton’s good start the second half belonged to Oakham who upped their gear and got their rewards for it.
Easson smashed a shot off the bar and Gav Cooke hit the woodwork as well.
The goal came from a nice cross by substitute Ewan Crawford, who put the ball into a dangerous area for Rothery to bury.
Potton were dangerous on the break until the final whistle but it was not their day as they were well marshalled.
The victory sees Oakham sit in 11th in the division and they have a tasty game on Saturday when they welcome to the league’s bottom side Burton Park Wanderers, 2pm kick-off.
