Stamford Rugby Club beat Market Bosworth in Counties 1 Midlands East (South)
Stamford made it two wins out two in Counties 1 Midlands East (South) on Saturday.
They defeated Market Bosworth 45-34 in a high-scoring clash at Hambleton Road to back up their opening weekend win at Long Buckby.
The rugby played by Stamford was as hot on the pitch as the weather.
In what was incredible heat, both teams played compelling rugby, however, it was Stamford who hit their straps first.
Moving the ball with discipline and precision culminating with a ruck close to Bosworth line. From there Toby Anderson picked and drove over taking two defenders with him. Harry Ayton, who certainly brought his kicking boots with him, provided the extra two points.
The first 15 minutes continued in a similar vein with the ball moving steadily towards the Bosworth try line.
Again, from a ruck, Mike Harris delivered five more points with Ayton adding the extra two.
However, for the next 15 minutes, Stamford dropped off and allowed Bosworth to create space out wide and score in the corner.
They replied almost straight after the restart with a skillfully worked try culminating with a break and score under the posts.
After this Stamford appeared to get second wind, particularly the backs.
Zach Morley magically stepped past five players to score a brilliant solo try. This was swiftly followed by another solo effort from the halfway line from the incredibly hard-working Mike Kendal for a 28-17 lead at the break.
Despite the heat the second half did not slow.
Morley followed his first half effort with another team sought try with Dave Martin supporting and running well.
But this half was a little more nip and tuck with reply tries from the opposition keeping the score tight.
Slowly the game did turn and Stamford established a strong lead with another solo affair from Kendal.
Forward play from a strong pack, led by Jack Jones, then enabled Austin Baker to crash over in the corner.
The lead stretched but Bosworth gained a consolation try at the end.
Stamford travel on Saturday to face Old Laurentians who were beaten by Oakham at the weekend.
