Action-packed weekend for town's rugby club
Stamford Rugby Club are hoping that an action-packed weekend for the Hambleton Road outfit will culminate in being crowned county champions.
Matt Albinson’s men make the trip to Lincoln on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm) to face the hosts in the final of the Lincolnshire Senior Cup.
It is the last match of Albinson’s reign as head-coach after a 25-year career with the Midlands 3 East (South) club.
They agonisingly missed out on promotion this season after being pipped to second spot on the number of games won over the course of the season.
But they have already beaten Lincoln – who play in Midlands 2 East (North) – this season after a crushing 55-19 home success in the NLD Shield quarter-final.
And Albinson is hoping that they can close a successful campaign on a high with victory in the final of the county showpiece.
He said: “The boys are champing at the bit to get back out there one more time this season and rubber stamp what has been a very successful season.
“We have developed a fantastic squad of players who can go on to greater things over the coming seasons.”
The match marks the end of the One Club Weekend which Stamford are staging at their Hambleton Road base over the Bank Holiday period.
They are holding an O2 Touch tournament on Friday night to coincide with the launch of the club’s beer festival in the club with house band Silverbach providing the entertainment.
The highly-rated Stamford Under 15s side then take centre stage on Saturday afternoon when they take on Rushden & Higham (3pm) before the club’s coaches and volunteers evening.
Sunday sees the club’s annual meeting (noon) before the Laurie Mills touch rugby festival gets underway at 2pm.
