Four-midable bowling exploits settle semi-final showdowns

Uppingham Town and Ketton Sports will meet in this year's final of the Rutland T20 competition.

The duo both progressed from Friday's semi-finals night after defeating Oakham and Burghley Park in the matches played at Uppingham's Castle Hill ground.

The competition has been run under a new format this year with two round-robin group stages of four clubs in each.

Oakham and Ketton Sports topped groups A and B respectively with Burghley Park and Uppingham Town the respective runners-up.

This resulted in Sports taking on Burghley in one semi-final with Oakham facing Uppingham in the other.

Burghley were put into bat in their match and were bowled out for 105 despite opener George Holmes making 48.

Peter Rowe returned 4-15 from 3.2 overs for Sports while Tariq Aziz took 4-16 from his three overs.

Shakir Mahmood (24) and Zeeshan Manzoor (51) then led the Sports push for victory before succumbing to the bowling of Joe Evans.

Joash Mathys (14no) and Rowe (9no) quickly picked up the winning baton though as they steered Sports home inside 10 overs.

Uppingham also had two bowlers in four-midable form as they dismissed Oakham for 124 in their clash.

Mark Cox collected 4-12 from four overs while Billy Beaver bagged 4-20 from a similar stint despite a promising Oakham opening from Richard Martin (26), Sam Janes (33) and Shyam Lakhani (19).

Last man Joe Stafford struck 16 for Oakham, but their bowlers struggled to make an impact on the Uppingham batting line-up.

Despite Alex Ashwin being dismissed for 21, skipper Jamie Dumford (41no) and the in-form Ben Farnsworth (51no) eased Uppingham home inside 14 overs.

The final between Ketton Sports and Uppingham Town will be played at Oakham CC, who traditionally organise the tournament, on Friday, July 27.
