Oakham Cricket Club make a winning start to the Leicestershire League campaign
Shaun Morris claimed a superb six-wicket haul as Oakham made a winning debut in the top flight of the Leicestershire League on Saturday.
Morris claimed 6-33 from a terrific 10-over spell as visiting Newtown Linford were defeated by four wickets in the Premier Division opener at the Lime Kilns.
The Oakham opening bowler got his side off to a dream start when Luke Gale was caught behind first ball by wicket-keeper Chris Larsen.
Morris then accounted for Dean Scaysbrook, Sam Wood, Craig Chapman and Philip Lowe in a devastating spell that left Linford on 70-5.
A 31-run stand between Jayden Schadendorf and Kyle Grobler briefly repelled the Oakham attack until the latter was trapped leg before by Ed Tattersall.
Oakham then claimed the crucial wicket of top scorer Schadendorf for 58 after he hit his own wicket off the bowling of Ed Siddle.
Rob Taylor then got in on the wicket-taking act to bowl Harry Bates before Morris completed his six-wicket haul to dismiss Karl Smith courtesy of a Tattersall catch.
Taylor then wrapped up the Linford innings by trapping Warren Birchall leg before to dismiss the visitors for 184.
Oakham lost opener Cameron Flowers for 10 with their reply on 27, but this brought Taylor out to join skipper Richard Martin at the crease.
They put on 59 runs for the second wicket until the home captain fell for 34 after being caught by Lowe off the bowling of Bates.
Tattersall joined Taylor and they took Oakham to 118 until the former was caught by Gale off Birchall for 21.
Shyam Lakhani added a further 16 and, despite the further departures of Alex Anthony and Morris, Taylor kept Oakham in control of their destiny.
He was joined by Larsen with the hosts needing 34 runs for victory and they guided Oakham home with an unbroken seventh wicket stand.
Taylor finished unbeaten on 74 after hitting 13 boundaries in his 81-ball innings while Larsen was 16 not out to help Oakham secure a 25-point haul.
Rory Brown matched Morris' wicket-taking feats to help Oakham 2nds complete a winning double for the club after an 87-run success at Birstall Village in Division Four East.
Brown bagged 6-29 from nine overs to help bowl out Birstall for 121 in their reply to Oakham's 208-9.
Sam Janes had top scored for the Rutlanders after hitting seven fours and three sixes in his 66 off just 68 deliveries.
Brown had Birstall opener Stephen White caught by Janes off the first ball of their reply and blitzed their top order to leave the hosts on 57-6.
They rallied briefly in the latter stages of their innings but wickets from Janes, Ankur Dave and Mark Owen secured the win for Oakham.
