Oakham United manager Seb Hayes felt his side had achieved two-thirds of their goals for the season as they rounded off their Peterborough League campaign on Saturday.

A 3-1 home win over Stamford Lions in a scheduled 'away' match that was staged at Lands' End Meadow secured a seventh place finish in the Premier Division for the Rutland side who had been languishing at the foot of the table for the previous two campaigns.

They had already won the Rutland Cup in pre-season with a quarter-final exit in the Peterborough League Cup the only achievement that wasn't met by Hayes' charges.

He said: "My target for the season was to win the Rutland Cup, finish in the top eight and go as far as could in the League Cup.

"To go out in the quarter-finals of the League Cup was the one that left the bitter taste because we have achieved our other objectives and I don't think there will be many teams out there who will have done everything they wanted to this season.

"It's been a good, solid season from where the club was. We have still got a lot to do but we are probably ahead of schedule.

"It's been a massive rebuild from top to bottom and the good thing for me is that we've played a lot of young lads and the main core of the team is from Oakham.

"We need to make a couple of additions in pre-season and then really go for it next season in what will be a very hard league."

Goals from Sven Hart, a first of the season from Louie Medwynter and Stewart Lambie secured Saturday's success in a decent end-of-season contest.

Hayes added: "Both sides tried to win the game and Lions have given us two tough hard matches this season.

"We were the better team consistently over the 90 minutes but they had spells where they caused us problems.

"It was a good game because we wanted to finish the season in seventh place and they wanted to go out with a bang."

Oakham started the livelier of the two teams and almost had an early goal when Michael Nelson crashed an effort off the crossbar.

Lions weathered an early onslaught and began to get a foothold into the game. Leon Kavanagh had their first effort as he fired a low shot that Oakham keeper Jamie Stephens palmed away.

At the other end, Lions custodian Jasper Kidd pulled off a double save to prevent the dangerous Aaron Hart from breaking the deadlock.

Veteran forward James Huett broke away from the Oakham defence but laced his effort just wide before Oakham thought they had the lead midway through the half when a cross was flicked over Kidd and bounced on the line before Finley Sewell hooked the ball clear with an excellent goalline clearance.

With the game approaching half-time, Oakham finally took the lead when Nelson cleverly flicked on a deep cross into the feet of Sven Hart, who rolled his shot under Kidd, and United took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Lions surged forward at the start of the second half and Zac Treweek jinked through several tackles and unleashed a fierce shot, but Stephans was equally to it before Dylan Taylor, playing in an unfamiliar role as a forward, fired a left-foot shot just over the Oakham bar.

Lions' failure to capitalise on several half-chances was punished when Oakham won the ball high up the pitch and cut the Stamford side open with a through ball that Medwynter finished off to double the lead for the Rutlanders.

Lions responded well and soon pulled a goal back when Kavanagh burst past his marker and fired a shot out of the reach of Stephens, and the Stamford side were back in the game.

Lions tried to push forward, but Oakham had control of the ball, and the young Stamford side looked to tire in the latter stages of the match and chance of a comeback was put to bed with just five minutes to play when Lambie secured the third goal for Oakham to seal a 3-1 scoreline.

Lions manager James Sheehan commented, "It was a good game. Both teams played some good football. In the end, Oakham just had too much for us.

"It has been a very difficult season, but the lads can be proud that they dug in and got over the line with the club intact.

"We have ended the campaign with a very young side and they have battled hard until that final whistle.

"The club would like to thank everyone that has supported us this season, both on and off the pitch. It has been a difficult season, but we got there and will look to rebuild next season."
