A solid all-round showing secured an opening day victory for Bourne Town on Saturday.

The Wakes ran out 3-1 winners against United Counties League newcomers Clipstone Miners Welfare in their first match of the Division One campaign at the JJ Mac Stadium.

Steve Wilson's side had to hit back after falling behind to run out worthy winners against their Mansfield visitors.

The ambitious Wakes have high hopes for the coming campaign and their starting line-up featured eight new signings and a further three on the substitutes' bench, including their latest addition in former Deeping Rangers player Jake Showler.

They began on the front foot and came close to breaking the deadlock early on when Nathan Smith headed against the crossbar following Herbie Panting's long throw.

Smith and Jake Brown both had shots blocked by a stubborn Clipstone defence before the visitors took a 19th minute lead with their first serious raid on the home goal.

A free-kick was clipped goalwards and headed on by Jordan Ball for Will Heather to beat home goalkeeper John Swales to the loose ball and hook home the opening goal.

It then needed a superb save from Swales to prevent Clipstone from doubling their advantage as he finger-tipped a fierce Chadd Wootton strike to safety at full stretch.

Bourne continued to probe for an equaliser with James Gordon sending over a dangerous cross that Brown deftly flicked into the danger area as Clipstone scrambled clear.

The equaliser did arrive four minutes before the break after Clipstone had initially cleared their lines following a poor Bourne corner.

Possession was returned to Sam Wilson whose clipped cross to the back post was converted by the incoming Brown to bring Bourne level.

Clipstone captain Eden Homer did go close to putting his side back in front in the dying throes of the first half with a well-struck shot that whistled just wide of the home goal.

Bourne were back on the offensive after the break and spurned a gilt-edged chance to take the lead when a defensive mix-up presented Smith with a golden opportunity but he was unable to sort his feet out to take control of the ball and Clipstone scrambled clear.

However, the Wakes didn't have to wait much longer to hit the front for the first time in the game as they took a 54th minute lead.

Josh Edmondson had won a corner when his header was deflected wide and, from the resultant setpiece, the former Blackstones player rose highest to nod in Bourne's second goal.

Bourne now had their tails up and lively widemen Brown and Ben Cowles both created openings after jinking runs, only to see shots either blocked or smothered by Clipstone goalkeeper Charlie Dando.

Home skipper Panting had to be alert on a couple of occasions to prevent Clipstone from finding a way back into the contest as he got a crucial touch on a through ball that would have sent Ball clear before turning away a dangerous centre from Wootton.

Tom Clarke's cross-shot then hit the upright as Clipstone looked to threaten before Bourne put the contest beyond their visitors with a third goal as the game was just entering the final 15 minutes.

Edmondson had seen his initial effort bring a fine save out of Dando but centre-half Matt Cox pounced on the rebound to smash home the final goal of the game.

Jake Sansby twice went close to increasing the home side's advantage before Edmondson was in the right place at the right time at the other end to head away an athletic effort from Heather to ensure Bourne secured their first three points of the season.

The fact it had taken Bourne until their eighth game of last season to record their first win highlights the progress in the last 12 months at the JJ Mac Stadium.

The new squad will only get better as they gel together over the coming weeks and months as the Wakes look for a loftier finish than last term.

Wakes: Swales, Gordon, Dee, S Wilson, Cox, Panting, Cowles (Knowling), Sansby (Showler), Smith (Edwards), Edmondson, Brown (Sootheran). Sub not used: D Wilson

Attendance: 164.
