Stamford College Old Boys shared the spoils with Deepings in a closely-contested Midlands 4 East (South) match on Saturday.

The College came out firing in the opening minutes, identifying gaps in the Deepings defence, and working their way up the pitch with impressive carries from Durman, Bell, and Whitfield.

It resulted in a penalty thanks to a Deepings infringement at the breakdown and College elected to get points on the board early and kick for posts, however, it was destined to pull wide and leave the scoreline blank.

Deepings fought back and found themselves edging closer to the Stamford try-line. That was until some impressive breakdown work from Rogers and Walker resulted in a turnover and the Old Boys launched their attack.

Sherwin identified space and dashed through the Deepings defence, beating their full-back with a clear 40-metre run to the try line.

Unfortunately, the certain score was denied as Sherwin sustained a hamstring injury while running – which subsequently led to him leaving the field.

After an extended period of back and forth, College finally got on the scoreboard through a score which saw Farthing skilfully weave through the Deepings defence for the try. The kick was converted to make the score 7-0.

In the closing moments of the first half, Deepings notched one of their own on the scoreboard.

A well-placed 50:22 kick gave Deepings excellent field position and endless shuddering collisions eventually led to them finding the try line.

Skipper Johns got the second half back underway and the match continued in the same fashion – a closely-contested and physical affair.

Huge credit must be given to the College pack who dominated the Deepings forwards at the setpiece.

This dominance gave the Old Boys backline the platform they needed to really attack the Deepings defence as Austin, Houston and Wilkinson all continued to make critical metres.

The match continued to hang in the balance as the Old Boys played exceptional rugby but struggled to convert that to points on the board.

That was until Greenslade broke the defensive line and managed to get the ball away quickly in the tackle to front-row Duncan who was lost out wide.

The space created by the quick ball gave him the opportunity to stretch his legs with an out-of-character run down the wing, much to the supporters' delight, until he popped the ball back inside to the much faster Farthing.

In what was to be his man-of-the-match performance, Farthing was able to finish the job and go in for his second try of the day. Once again, the kick was converted and the College had a 14-7 lead.

The match continued with huge defensive efforts from Darlington, Whitfield, and a particularly impressive hit from Greenslade, while the likes of Brierley-Lewis, Bell and Flanders continued to punch through the Deepings defence thanks to quick ball generated by scrum-half Denechau.

In the closing moments of the match, Old Boys found themselves deep in their own half thanks to another well placed kick from the Deepings fly half.

Eventually, the pressure eased and the red and green machine were awarded a scrum.

However, the College setpiece experienced its first blunder of the day that resulted in a messy scrum and a lost ball.

With the pressure back on, the Old Boys continued to pour everything they had into an incredible defensive effort, repelling the Deepings attackers time and time again.

However, after several minutes of heroic defence from Stamford College, driving the Deepings attack further and further away from the try line, the pressure proved too much.

The Deepings forwards finally found space and registered their second score of the afternoon.

The extras were added, levelling the scores at 14-14, with the referee blowing his whistle shortly after the restart to the game.

The College are back in league action this weekend as they entertain Bedford Swifts at Welland Academy.
