Stamford AFC dumped out of the cup by lower league Coleshill Town
So much for Stamford AFC’s fresh start. Despite a change of managers, David Staff out - Andrew Wilson in, it was another disappointing day for Daniels fans on Sunday as they watched their side exit the FA Cup second preliminary round against lower league opposition.
Stamford lost 2-0 to Coleshill Town, who play two divisions lower in the Midlands Premier Division, conceding goals to Luke Barlone and Simeon Cobourne.
After a 7-1 loss at Hyde United on Monday last week, the cup was a chance of redemption for Stamford’s players but instead they looked off the pace for much of the tie at Tamworth.
The Daniels started by putting pressure on the Coleshill goal and won a pair of corners but nothing came from them and the hosts were soon putting pressure on at the other end of the ground, forcing Stamford stopper Richard Knight into his first save of the afternoon from a volley.
Stamford were struggling to find their men with their passes, hampering their attempts to attack.
In the 25th minute Coleshill took the lead, a nice little back heel splitting open the red’s defence, allowing Mykel Beckley to cut the ball back for Barlone to fire home from close range.
At the break Wilson switched Lynas King, who had picked up a yellow card in the first half, for David Bell, and the midfielder brought some added vision to the visitor’s attack.
The Daniels had a chance to take the lead early in the second half after a goalmouth scramble in front of the Coleshill net, with Andy Hall eventually having a shot saved.
Stamford created chances late on with Ryan Robbins, substitute Dan Clements and Jordan Smith all having efforts but only Clements drew a save from the home keeper.
In the 90th minute Coleshill substitute Cobourne made the result certain with the hosts’ second of the afternoon to dump Stamford out.
The diminutive striker was a handful when he came on and finished with ease, dummying Knight and then going around the Stamford keeper to slot the ball into the net.
Cue Knight starting an investigation into where his defence was.
The Daniels have just two days turn around until they are in action again with Sutton Coldfield Town coming to the Zeeco Stadium in the Evo-Stik NPL tomorrow night (Tuesday)
