Stamford AFC finished their pre-season preparations in disappointing fashion on Saturday when they went down 2-0 away to lower league Coalville Town.

The Daniels called off their pre-season match with Bourne last week because they were suffering an early season injury crisis with nine players missing with niggles.

That said Stamford manager David Staff named a relatively strong starting side, if young squad, to face the Evo-Stik First Division South outfit but it was mistakes which cost them.

In the match day squad were Stamford Development U21s players Sam Thorpe, Tom Mann and Elliot Bentley.

Coalville Town scored a goal in each half from their strikers.

First Jake Woolley was in the right place at the right time to tap in from close range after a shot from distance hit bar and fell to him.

After the break Aaron Hooton sealed the result when the Daniels coughed up possession in the midfield and Coalville launched a three-on-one counter attack which was well finished.

The home side had plenty of other chances to add to the score as they well and truly shaded the tie.

Stamford have shown mixed form in pre-season, winning three, losing two and drawing once.

They thrashed lower league Blackstones 7-0 in the opening game before recording a good 2-0 victory away at Spalding United in the new look Lincolnshire Senior Trophy. However the Daniels’ run in that competition ended five days later when they lost on penalties to higher league Gainsborough Trinity after playing out a 1-1 draw when they played some fluent and attacking football, outplaying their opposition that night.

However that was followed by a 5-2 loss against Histon before beating a Northampton Town Development side 2-1.

The Bourne Town game was cancelled because of injuries and they concluded with a loss at Coalville.

Stamford kick-off their Evo-Stik NPL campaign away at Nantwich Town on Saturday.
