Former world number one Nicky Brett among stellar cast for Stamford Bowls Club's open singles tournament




Four Stamford bowlers will kick-off the club’s annual open singles tournament which has attracted some of the country’s leading players including former world number one Nick Brett, 2019 world semi-finalist Wayne Willgress and several England internationals.

Michael Jeapes, Tony Barwell, Richard Allam and Christine Ford will play in the opening session at 6pm on Saturday in an event which has again been sponsored by Anthea Kettle in memory of her late father Nigel.

Also competing on the first night will be Stamford’s Stephen Harris, who has dual membership at Spalding and Chris Ballard.

The holder Michael Knight (Whiteknights IBC, Reading) will be defending the title he won against Harris in last year’s final.

Brett, Willgress and Knight will be among those entering the competition on Sunday morning (8.30am start).

Former winner Mark Royal will be bringing his Potters Roadshow retail bowls shop.

First round draw (Stamford unless stated):

Saturday, September 28: 6pm - Jim Wiseman (St Neots) v Christine Ford, Michael Jeapes v Jason Lewis (Grantham), Richard Allam v Mark Eurich (Grantham), Jeff Pitt (Peterborough) v Tony Barwell.

7.30 pm - Leigh James (St Neots) v Jordan Philpott (Spalding), Derek King v Rob Greenwood (Huntingdon), Lewis Parnell (Melton) v Stephen Harris, Howard Shipp (H’don) v C Ballard. 8.50 pm - final qualifying (winners from above).

Further first and second round matches take place throughout Sunday. The quarter-finals are scheduled at 6.10pm and semi-finals at 7.40pm.

Stamford IBC’s Over 60s begin a new campaign in Division One of the Lincolnshire League at long-time champions Lincoln A.

The match will also give its players chance to try their skills on the Lincoln club’s new blue carpet. Stamford directors are considering a similar colour surface when a new carpet is laid next April.

Among those drafted into the team for the first time are established county bowlers Tony Scarr and Roger Martin who will play number three and skip in a rink with Ron Blake and Maurice Dye.
