A terrific ton from Rob Taylor laid the foundations for Oakham to claim their first win of the Leicestershire League Premier Division season on Saturday.

Taylor thumped 11 fours and five sixes in his match-winning 121 as Oakham defeated Rutland rivals Uppingham by 132 runs at the Lime Kilns.

Oakham had been asked to bat first in a match which saw both sides seeking their first victories of the campaign.

And Taylor and home skipper Richard Martin put on 55 for the first wicket until the latter was bowled by Scott Green for 28.

Charles Gill was then trapped leg before first ball by Green, but Uppingham's hopes were soon stalled when Charlie Hurley joined Taylor.

Hurley hit 45 as they put 116 runs for the third wicket before Green struck again, courtesy of a catch from wicket-keeper Jamie Dumford.

Cameron Flowers came out to join Taylor and they continued the run spree with an 88-run fourth wicket partnership.

Taylor was eventually caught by Danny Dumford off the bowling of Toby Rees with the same partnership accounting for Flowers who smashed four fours and four sixes in his 51 as Oakham closed their 50 overs on 261-5.

Uppingham lost skipper Dumford early in their reply and, when the prolific Mo Iqbal lasted just two deliveries, they were reeling on 13-2.

Sam Hodson kept the runs flowing from one end as he hit 12 boundaries in his 67 before being the seventh wicket to fall.

Jonny Kay cracked a late cameo of 24 but it wasn't going to stop Oakham from claiming a convincing win.

Harry Tyler took 3-41 for the hosts while Shaun Morris, Flowers and Charlie Baker all claimed two wickets apiece.

The Rutland side were then dismissed for 122 in their reply with Fergus Cato top-scoring with 55 and Shah scoring 33.

Sammy Linford had produced a tidy spell of 2-24 from 10 overs as their hosts made 179-6 from 40 overs.

Opener James Toghill struck 32 in Marko's reply but they were kept under control by the home attack and finished their 40 overs on 82-9 as Vinay Kumar claimed 6-9 from five overs.

They had made 177-7 after batting first with Chris White hitting an unbeaten 65 for Wakerley.

But the Foxes needed less than 20 overs to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season as Faiaz Kasia's 68 helped wrap up the win.

Uppingham 3rds were beaten by 25 runs against their Houghton & Thurnby counterparts.

Rossiter (49) and Chris Thomas (22) led the Town reply but Matt Baxter's 4-19 from 10 overs helped Houghton to victory.

Market Overton 2nds and Oakham 3rds are both still looking for their first wins of the season.
