Ketton triathlete Tom Hattee has exceeded all expectations to be crowned national champion in his age group.

Hattee, who is a member of the Ketton Panthers club, beat off competition from more than 50 elite juniors to triumph in the UK Triathlon National Finals at Mallory Park.

Swift transitions helped the 14-year-old Stamford School pupil hold off his rivals to secure the win in the TriStar 3 category (age 13/14) in an impressive time of 25mins 51secs.

Hattee said: “From my perspective, on the swim I was pushing it hard to come out in the top 10.

“I didn’t think I was going to get the first bike pack but I held on and got to the leader who was one lone rider and I just went from there.

“I just pushed it as hard as I could especially out on the run. I just can’t believe I came first, I was gobsmacked.”

Hattee qualified for the finals by winning the Leeds ITU World Triathlon event in June and the national high-performance drafting race at Eton Dorney in July. He will now be placed in the UK’s SuperSeries events next year.

He is one of more than 100 members, aged from four years to 16, who make up the Ketton Junior Panthers.

The aim of the club is to provide children with friendly, fun training sessions to improve running, cycling and swimming skills as well as general fitness.

The volunteer-run club caters for all abilities and, although some children prefer not to compete, the end goal is the challenge of competing in local and national triathlons.

The Ketton Panthers Triathlon Academy aims to provide an opportunity for young triathletes to develop and progress their skills and endurance to a higher level.

It hopes to bridge the gap between the club and East Midlands Skill Schools level and the regional development squads/academy.

It also aims to inspire younger Ketton Panthers to train and race more regularly and aspire to be a part of the Academy when they reach the age of 12 (Tristart 2).

The Academy is run by volunteers, including BTF level qualified coaches and supplements the training provided by Ketton Panthers Triathlon Club.
