Deeping United ended the year on a high to maintain their push for honours in Division Three of the Peterborough League on Saturday.

They ran out 5-2 winners at Leverington Reserves to maintain the pressure on unbeaten table-toppers Sawtry.

Top scorer Daryn Whiteman took his goal haul for the season to 25 with a brace while man of the match Ben Catanach netted a double with Steve Jucikas also on target.

Co-boss Ian Abbott commented: "Daryn just can't stop scoring at the moment and he knows where the goal is while Ben was really good on Saturday.

"We couldn't put anything together in the first half and Daryn did us get out of a bit of trouble because we had missed many so chances.

"It was fairly comfortable in the end though and it was nice to end the year with a win.

"It's been a good year for the club, winning our first official trophy, and hopefully we can keep it going into the new year."

Catanach had created three openings that were spurned by United before they took the lead after 26 minutes.

He was again the provider with a through ball that set Whiteman free and he curled home an exquisite finish past the Leverington goalkeeper.

Leverington did get back on level terms from the penalty spot following a foul in the box before United regained the lead on the stroke of half-time as Josh Raven went on an overlap before squaring the ball for Whiteman to tap home.

A third United goal then followed early in the second half as Reece Parker picked out Catanach with an excellent pass and he did the rest by showing superb control to take possession and then slot home.

Catanach converted his second and United's fourth on the hour mark with Raven again the provider, however, Leverington reduced the arrears again with a goal following a setpiece.

United wrapped up the win with 15 minutes remaining as Jucikas applied a close range finish following a fumble by the Leverington goalkeeper.

The victory means third-placed United are eight points behind league leaders Sawtry with the sides still to play each other twice this season.

Abbott added: "We are looking good but I can't see Sawtry dropping points against anybody else. They have done brilliantly and fair play to them for that.

"I still think we can give them a good game and probably beat them both times if we're at full strength but we're relying on them to drop points elsewhere."

United's reserve side went down to a 6-1 away defeat at Whittlesey A in Division Four with Lewis Challis scoring their goal.

Deeping Rangers Reserves will finish the year in second spot in Division One after a 3-2 home success over Wisbech Town's second string on Saturday.

The Clarets had to overturn a 2-1 deficit to claim the victory with Will Howarth scoring twice and an own goal compiling their tally.

Stamford Lions went down to a 6-2 away defeat at Oundle in the Premier Division with Dom Butkus and Simon Griffiths on target.

Scott Spearink struck a hat-trick as Wittering Premiair Reserves returned to winning ways in Division Two with a 3-0 home victory over Parkside.
