Uppingham Town came up short by just nine runs on Saturday in a thrilling match with Loughborough Carillon in the Leicestershire League Division Two.

Uppingham skipper Jamie Dumford won the toss and decided to put the hosts in to bat at Moor Lane and his brother Danny got almost instant reward, taking Loughborough opener Dan Freeman-Langford for just two runs. The wicket was a family affair with Jamie taking the catch from behind the sticks.

Town’s bowlers took wickets at regular intervals with Alex Ashwin finishing with the best figures of the bunch with 3-36, ahead of Danny Dumford 2-22, Don Butchart 2-18 and Patrick Latham 1-35.

James Keywood and Scott Green bowled 12 overs between them without making a breakthrough. Uppingham looked on top of the match until number eight Karthik Ananthanarayan came in and smashed 67 not out in just 54 balls, notching 11 fours.

His late cameo took Loughborough to 198-8 and the game was evenly balanced.

Uppingham started well with the skipper hitting 30, however Martin Bennett was out for a below par 10 thanks to a good ball from Ananthanarayan. That brought in Jamie Richardson who top scored for Town with 60.

The problem was he was given little support as the next three batsman in the line up went for scores in the teens and then the tail were swept up quickly. The final five batsmen in scored just 12 runs between them as Uppingham were all out for 189 in the 43rd over. If the match had gone the distance Uppingham should have just taken the victory.

Uppingham remain in third place in Division Two but are slipping away from the top two, and promotion.
