Deeping United moved into pole position in Division Three of the Peterborough League with victory in their crunch clash on Saturday.

They defeated third-placed Casterton to move above long-time leaders Sawtry whose match against Dreams was postponed.

United's top scorer Daryn Whiteman scored twice in three second half minutes to secure the win which leaves Deeping a point clear at the top but Sawtry do have three games in hand.

The victory saw United gain revenge on Casterton for an earlier reversal this term and co-boss Ian Abbott feels that it could be the turning point in his side's season after a hard working display.

Abbott said: "We knew exactly how Casterton would play so I wanted us to really press them and out-work them to give them no time on the ball.

"The boys responded in the best way that I have ever seen because it was such a significant game in terms of our season.

"They were absolutely fantastic with their work-rate and how they closed Casterton down.

"It's maybe the turning point in our season as we're now top of the league and still have Sawtry to play twice.

"It's set up for the finale in the last eight games and the pressure is now on Sawtry because they've had it easy so far this season.

"It's still in their hands and they have been brilliant this season, but our team is now purring again and we're hard to beat. We're on their coat-tails and breathing down their necks."

United's all-action first half performance didn't bring any goal rewards though and Casterton grew into the contest as the opening period wore on.

The elusive goal finally arrived in the first minute of the second half as United came out of the traps quickly to win possession from Casterton's kick-off.

Nathan Smith set Jake Lyon free down the right-hand and his cross was lashed home at the back post by Whiteman.

Buoyed by taking the lead, United doubled their advantage three minutes later as Reece Parker's corner picked out Whiteman to fire home at the back post.

United continued to create the better chances with Steve Jucikas going close while the Casterton goalkeeper kept them at bay with some fine saves.

The vital third goal didn't arrive and Casterton then set up a nervy finale as the United defence was caught flat-footed and top scorer Ryan Brown raced clear to score.

The visitors then had a late appeal for a penalty turned down as United held out with Jorge Barbosa again in fine form for Deeping after collecting his second successive man of the match award.

Wittering Premiair A ran out 3-0 away winners at King's Cliffe in the same division thanks to goals from Spencer Haskins (two) and Alex Donaldson.

Deeping Rangers Reserves bounced back from last week's defeat with a 2-0 away win at third-placed Ramsey Town in Division One.

Kee Walker and Dan Evans were on target to keep the Clarets in second spot, four points behind leaders Warboys who have two games in hand.

Joe McDonald contined his scoring streak for Stamford Bels Reserves in their 3-2 away reversal at Farcet in Division Two.

McDonald followed up last week's hat-trick with both of the goals in a narrow away defeat for Bels who had Nick Greenwod sent off.
