Rafa Mazzarella was happy to look on as Bourne Town won on the opening day of the season for the first time since 2010.

The Wakes boss was close to putting himself in goal due to the absence of Aaron Fagan but the number one jersey was handed to reserve-team assistant-manager Jimmy McDonnell.

Tyler Sculthorpe (2) and Joe Moore-Papworth were on target in Saturday’s home win against Buckingham Town who were reduced to 10 men moments before the first goal.

Mazzarella said: “I’m very happy with that.

“In the first 20 minutes I was disappointed we didn’t make more of it but at least we shackled their forward who looked a threat.

“We scored straight from the free-kick after the red card and getting a second goal just before half-time made a big difference.

“Then we tried to slow the game down and keep the ball but we kept giving it away cheaply which gave them a spell when we were hanging on.

“The most encouraging thing is that we scored at the right times, kept a clean sheet and never looked in any real danger.

“I didn’t think we were that good – in fact we were way below par.

“We were without a goalkeeper and forward plus we’ve still got three or four others to come in.”

Bourne are back in action at home to ON Chenecks on Saturday.
