White aiming to claim a Rio place
Olympics hopeful Joshua White is preparing for a three-day training camp with the England boxing squad which could go a long way towards deciding who gets a place on the plane for Rio this summer.
White, 19, who lives in Hambleton, had been selected to represent England in a tournament in Germany back in December but the competition was cancelled late in the day when a leading home fighter picked up an injury.
“I was gutted as you can imagine,” said White.
However the amateur boxer, who competes in the under 69kg weight category, may now have the chance to represent England in an international tournament in Norway.
That will depend on whether there are enough English fighters available to form a team.
However at the end of the month White will travel to Sheffield, a city he knows well as he trains there each week, to train and compete against the best fighters in the country at the Institute of Sport, to prove he is the nation’s best chance of winning gold in Rio.
White said: “It’s going to be a big one deciding towards who gets picked for the Olympics.”
