Stamford manager fears league start will be delayed

Daniels boss Graham Drury is starting to worry that the league season won’t start next month as scheduled.

The Northern Premier League is due to kick off on Saturday, September 19 but Drury believes pockets of Covid-19 cases could scupper that.

“You hear of cases in places like Melton and Newark and that’s where some of my players are from. Other places have local lockdowns so how can you have teams coming and going?” he said. “I think it could be October before we get started but I think the FA Cup games (in September) will go ahead behind closed doors.”

Drury says he feels for fans not yet allowed into grounds and is worried for clubs not getting income as a result. The Daniels themselves lost out when the annual friendly with League One side Peterborough United had no spectators.

He added: “From a football viewpoint it’s really disappointing but we’re still in difficult times and we mustn’t lose sight of the fact that many families have lost loved ones.”
