Oakham’s Zoe Smith finished fifth in her age group in the Ironman Wales contest, her main race of the year.
Racing for Tri UK and under the guidance of Rutland coach Mary Hardwick for the second year, Zoe took on the course billed as the toughest on the circuit.
It started with a 2.4-mile sea swim from Tenby’s North Beach, then a 1K run to the first transition. The bike course was a very technical 112-mile route not helped by torrential rain making the roads very slippery. That was followed by a 26.2-mile run.
Zoe clocked a time of 12hr 8min to finish fifth in her age group (30-34), was the 15th woman overall and 277th out of the more than 1,600 entrants in total.
