All aboard the HMS Pinafore at Stamford Corn Exchange
Stamford Gilbert and Sullivan Players will be performing one of its most popular operas, HMS Pinafore at the Stamford Corn Exchange next week, followed by another favourite, Trial by Jury.
HMS Pinafore is among the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan operas, with its infectious tunes and generally well-constructed libretto.
The story takes place aboard the ship HMS Pinafore. The captain’s daughter, Josephine is in love with a lower-class sailor, although her father intends her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, the first Lord of the Admiralty.
She abides by her father’s wishes at first, but Sir Joseph’s advocacy of the equality of humankind encourages Ralph and Josephine to over turn conventional social order.
They declare their love for each other and eventually plan to elope. The captain discovers this plan, but, as in many of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, a surprise disclosure changes things dramatically near the end of the story.
Performances will take place from October 7 to October 10 at 7.30pm with a matinee performance on Saturday at 2.30pm.
Tickets will cost £13.50 adults, £12.50 concessions and £7 for children.
