Park closures at Burghley ahead of horse trials
Pedestrians will no longer be able to walk through all of Burghley Park in the weeks around the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.
The estate owners, The Burghley House Preservation Trust, has decided this year to restrict access to the areas around the horse trials site in the interest of public safety.
As a result, the Middle Bar cattle grid gate will now be closed until the trials start on September 3, and again from September 7 until September 18. Those who want to walk to the house from the Bottle Lodges side of the park will now have to do so via Barnack Road.
Estate director David Pennell said the decision had not been taken lightly.
“It’s quite a tricky one to make,” he added. “It’s something we have never done before.
“But with the Government introducing new legislation on construction in April, it meant our horse trials footprint falls under construction rules and regulations.
“Over the years we have tried to route people and take them through stringed walkways but we just have so many people ignoring them. People take pushchairs and bikes and they don’t want to walk through the long grass.
“They were ignoring where we were trying to take them safely and going back on the roads where there was all this construction traffic.
“We have taken this step to see how it works.”
Mr Pennell said he was keen to get people’s thoughts both before and after the trials.
“We would like to hear people’s feedback. It’s no problem - just ring the estate office.”
The horse trials run from September 3 to 6. Once again the world’s top riders will compete in front of huge crowds in Burghley Park.
But it’s not just the equestrian events that make the event world-famous. The extensive shopping and delicious food and drink will once again be back for visitors to enjoy.
The Rugby World Cup trophy will also make an appearance ahead of this year’s tournament in England and Wales.
Mr Pennell said: “It’s a really exciting time for Burghley.”
