OAKHAM will celebrate National Poetry Day with a packed day of entertainment,
On Saturday Rutland County Museum in Oakham will be transformed into Lyric Lounge Rutland - a spell-binding performance space celebrating the power of live literature.
The event aims to inspire artists, young people, writers and literature fans alike through workshops, performance opportunities for local artists and appearances by established spoken word poets such as Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze and the Alan Sillitoe short story competition winner Mullet Proof Poet.
Visitors can practice their DJ and VJ skills with live DJ and performance visual workshops from 11am until 5pm and get creative with artist and writer Grey Gibson who will be running drop-in activities combining drawing, writing, sculpture and games during the day.
There is the fantastic opportunity to perform your own work on the Lyrical Lunchtime Open Mic hosted by Mullet Proof Poet at 2pm. You can also see the Lyric Lounge Showcase from 5.30pm including performances from Mullet Proof Poet, Jean Binta Breeze and The Gang of Angels, a 10-strong choir.
Spokesman Robert Clayton said: “We are delighted that Lyric Lounge is visiting Rutland and bringing top poets, DJs and VJs to share the inspiration of spoken word – lyrics, prose and rhyme with beats and visuals that will captivate the audience and hopefully inspire a new generation of artists.”
The event runs from 11am until 7pm at Rutland County Museum in Oakham.
