A first-time playwright has turned a novel he read while on holiday into his debut stage production.

George Hetherington, 78, of Wothorpe Road, Stamford, will bring ‘Dancing’ to Stamford Methodist Church in Barn Hill on February 21.

The play is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Warren Bardsley. George was given a copy of the book by his wife Jan while on holiday in Malta in 2013, and soon became hooked.

He said: “I was soon absorbed in the book, not wanting to put it down until I had read it. Not being a regular or interested reader of books, this was somewhat surprising.

“Never having written a play before I, rather unusually, talked constantly about the idea that the story would make a great drama.”

George travelled to London to meet the author, a friend of the Rev Malcolm Peach, who was previously minister at Stamford Methodist Church.

“Warren was not surprised by my suggestion that the book could be adapted into a drama as he had approached friends in the BBC to see if they would be interested in doing this. My enthusiasm for the idea of a play was so strong that I asked Warren if I could have a go.

“It proved a daunting task, what to include and what to leave out with so many moving and dramatic stories within the book.

“After some nine scripts were written and discarded, with helpful input from Warren, the ‘final’ script seemed to be ready. This was followed by the ‘final final’ script and eventually the ‘last script’.

“Rehearsals have seen minor alterations to the script, as I found that the written word is not how words and phrases would be spoken in everyday life.”

The play is directed by Darren Rawnsley. It includes film, music, sound, dance and poetry. It will begin at 7.30pm on February 21.

Tickets are £5, on sale from George on 07891437914 or at the church on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Money raised is going to the charity Medical Aid for Palestine.
